CMS Funds 200 Medicare Residency Slots Authorized By The 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act
The Fiscal Year 2022 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) final rule established policies to award 1,000 Medicare funded residency slots over a five-year period to qualifying hospitals authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 . The first round was awarded to 100 teaching hospitals representing 30 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. 125 of the direct graduate medical education slots were allocated for primary care and 20 slots allocated to psychiatry. The effective date of the first award will be July 1, 2023.
Priority was given to hospitals located in geographic areas with the greatest need for additional providers determined by Health Professional Shortage Areas. CMS has indicated that approximately three-quarters of the new residency slots will be for primary care and mental health specialties.
The application period for the second round of 200 residency positions opened in January 2023 and close on March 31, 2023.
